After reading Chapter One in American Ways, we can see that America is a country that is made up of various immigrants of diverse countries. In this paragraph, please answer this question that is related to this topic:
What has changed about you or your life since you moved to the US? In other words, as an immigrant in a new country, what is different for you now? Explain your answer in one paragraph. You need to have a topic sentence, three supporting points, and a conclusion.
If you do not know how to develop and organize a paragraph, please review that here.
This must be typed and submitted on Canvas. If you do not know how to do that, please see Fardokht, a librarian, or me.
Example Paragraph
Moving to the United States has made me understand what it feels like to be a child again. The first reason is because at first, I couldn’t speak the language everyone else was using. For example, when someone asked me for help on the street, I could only respond by saying, “I don’t speak English.” This made me feel like I had no power or voice. The second reason why I feel like a young kid after moving to the US is because I have to take the classes that I had taken in high school all over again. For instance, in my high school, I took a world history class, and I even have a Bachelo’rs degree from my country, but now that I am starting in a new country, I have to re-take the same world history class and all the others ones before I get a new college degree. Finally, the last reason why I feel like a child is because I don’t get the respect that I deserve. In my country, I was a highly-respected accountant and one of the top banks. Because my English is limited and because my degree from my country is not valid here, I am not an accountant anymore. Now I am a student worker at the Business Office at Pierce College. In conclusion, these experiences as an immigrant have made me feel like I’m starting all over again, like a baby. It’s not easy.

Please read the following:
Misa, Chapter 5
Vaclav Smil,”Detonator of the Population Explosion,” Nature 400 (1999): 415. (Available on Blackboard Learn in the additional readings folder)
William Pepper, “The Children of Vietnam,” Ramparts January (1967): 45-68. (Available on Blackboard Learn in the additional readings folder)
Please watch the following:
A Man, A Plan, A Canal, Panama, directed by Carl Charlson (1987; Boston, MA: PBS Video, 2004), DVD. (shown in class and available in Hagerty Library on reserve)
Based on the readings by Misa, Pepper, and David McCullough’s film on the Panama Canal, as well as the in-class presentations, please discuss the following four (4) points in a well-written, 300-400 word essay (feel free to exceed that amount if you have more to say):
1. Based on the account provided by McCullough in his film, it is clear that construction of the Panama Canal was an imperial project undertaken by the United States government. Before U.S. construction of the Canal could begin, it was necessary to draft a Treaty with Columbia granting the U.S. a legal right to proceed with the project. Explain how the United States ultimately obtained permission from Columbia to build the Canal.
2. The advent of what has come to be called the “second” industrial revolution resulted in an increased interconnected relationship between the institutions of science, commercial industry, higher education, and government. This growing interconnected relationship between these institutions fundamentally changed them in a number of ways. Identify at least three (3) changes that took place in one or all of these institutions that stemmed from this interconnected relationship.
3. The development of the Haber-Bosch process allowed scientists to synthesize nitrogen. This development resulted in immediate and long-term political, economic, and environmental impact. Identify at least three (3) consequences that were a direct result of the Haber-Bosch process.
4.Both William Pepper and Dr. Benjamin Spock argue that the United States is responsible for the lives of those injured or killed by chemical weapons in Vietnam. Review the Code of Ethics posted on the website for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (you can access it via the following link: https://www.aiche.org/about/code-ethics). Is there anything in the Code that explicitly prohibits or condones the involvement of chemical engineers in the production of chemical weapons? Do you think that the Code should be amended in any way, or do you think it is sufficient as is?
In this essay, as in all essays for this course, use examples from the readings, film, and class lectures to support your arguments. When quoting text, always include the author’s name and page number where you found the quote.

Chapter 4 in the Snort textbook is at least the third time in this course that you will see information about placing IDS within a network architecture. We will pick up this theme with our first lab assignment, which will be due at the end of the session. Your assignment is to create a network “architecture” diagram representing your home network (presuming each of you have Internet access from home) and to indicate on the diagram where you might locate IDS sensors. You need not use a technical drawing tool such as Visio, nor do you need to find relevant clip art or other graphics for your diagram. Lines and boxes such as those you can produce in PowerPoint are sufficient. If drawing via computer is not feasible, I will accept a scanned image of a hand-drawn diagram as well. For those of you interested in creating technical diagrams but not interested in the expense of a professional program like Visio or MagicDraw, there is an open-source drawing program called Dia that offers many similar features, and is suitable among other things for network diagrams. It is available for Windows and Linux platforms at http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/.
Since the assignment asks you to use your own home network as a focus, and many home networks are quite understandably simply in design, it is acceptable and even encouraged for you to produce a diagram of what your home network might look like if you determined you had a need for components like dedicated IDS solutions. Your diagram should include the following elements at a minimum:
1. Representation of your Internet connection (whether dial-up, cable modem, router, etc.)
2. Computers connected to the network, as well as a designation of whether the connection type is wired or wireless (or both)
3. Any other devices attached to the network
4. The location and type of any IDS sensors you would place on the network
Support your decision on placement of your IDS by providing a strong argument explaining your choices about IDS placements. Your lab assignment should be submitted via your Assignments folder.
