Two Parts:
Part One; Critical Summary:
 Summarize the article:
A.) Outline the Major thesis that the author is attempting to establish. (What is the conclusion she is trying to establish?  What’s her Big Point?)
B.) Outline what reasons she gives to support this. (What are her premises?)
Part Two; Critical Evaluation:
Evaluate the argument:
A.) Support Question- If the premises were true, would they support the conclusion? Would the make the conclusion more likely?  Would they give one good reason to accept his conclusion?
B.) Content Question- Are the premises good (clear, true, non-controversial/reasonable)?
Clarity: To be a good premise it must be clear.  It must not contain vagaries and ambiguities which prevent the reader from understanding what is being asserted.  One cannot accept as true what one does not understand. However, note two things:
It is not enough to merely claim that a premise is vague or contains a vague term. If you make such a claim, you must defend it. Why do you say the premise is vague? What is the troublesome term or terms and why are they troublesome? Why does this vagueness prevent you from determining whether the sentence is true or reasonable?
As we discussed in class, where an author uses a vague term, it is appropriate to extend to him or her the “principle of charity” and try to guess what a reasonable, intelligent person might have meant by the term. It is a weakness of the argument is the author is vague, but in the interest of advancing the dialog it becomes the reader’s responsibility to try to “fill in the blanks.”
Truth: Of course the premise must be true.  False premises support nothing. However, be careful here. That a premise is false, in and of itself, is no reason for thinking that the conclusion is false. Only that the conclusion is not supported by this argument.
Reasonableness: Since the work of an argument is to persuade, one must make use of premises that are acceptable to the general public if one is to persuade the general public (you).  It is a weakness of an argument if it makes use of a premise which is controversial, whether, it turns out to be true or not. However, it is not enough to merely claim that a premise is controversial. If you are asserting that this is a claim that the author is being unreasonable and that reasonable people would reject his premise(s), you then must say who the reasonable people are/ or what rational grounds they could give you for rejecting the author’s claim(s).
Stray notes:
I want you to begin your paper with something like this as your opening statement:
The author of the article claims that (insert conclusion here) and offers various reasons in support of this position. In my paper I shall summarize and evaluate the argument. In the end I believe that it is (successful/unsuccessful) and will explain and defend my assessment.
It would be nice to see something similar in the way of a summary at the end to bookend your essay.
The paper should be 4-5 pages in length however, I will not count pages or grade on the basis of number of pages.  I will however grade based on completeness of the assignment. Doing an adequate-good paper would only earn and average-good grade (C-B).  An Excellent Paper (A) will do more than the minimum.  For instance, one might consider implications of the view or how the issue may be resolved.
Here is a rough rubric to follow: You might also look at my colleague’s (Dr. Kenneth Henley) directions to his classes “Writing a philosophy paper for Prof. Kenneth Henley (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” a link to which you will find on the left hand side of his webpage

In this assignment, you will have a chance to discuss a topic that brings personality theory together with social psychology. Dealing with unhealthy groups like gangs or cults is an important issue in social psychology. However, you cannot fully address this issue if you do not first understand personality development and how one’s personality affects the choices that are made. Specifically, you will look at Skinner’s behavioral perspective on personality development and discuss how that theory can play a role in this issue of unhealthy groups.

Bob is an adolescent who grew up in a gang-infested part of a large city. His parents provided little supervision while he was growing up and left Bob mostly on his own. He developed friendships with several kids in his neighborhood who were involved in gangs, and eventually joined a gang himself. Now crime and gang activities are a way of life for Bob. These have become his way to identify with his peer group and to support himself.
It is relatively easy to see that Bob’s environment has played a large role in his current lifestyle. This coincides with Skinner’s concept of environment being the sole determinant of how personality develops. Skinner believed that if you change someone’s environment and the reinforcements in that environment, you can change their behavior.

Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research Skinner’s concept of the environment and answer the following questions:
If you were to create an environment for Bob to change his behavior from that of a gang member to a respectable and law-abiding citizen, what types of environmental changes and positive reinforcements would you suggest and why?
What are some interventions that are used in the field currently? Are there any evidence-based programs that use these environmental and reinforcement interventions?
Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Topic: Flywheel and Doom Loop
Think of two organizations or units you have observed: one that followed the Flywheel principle, and the other that fell into the Doom Loop. What caused the difference between the two? If you do not have this life experience, you will need to interview a leader, explain the concepts, and report the answers. What does your contrast teach about why so many organizations fall into the Doom Loop rather than build momentum over the long term in the Flywheel? How is this important to public safety organizations?
Board 2
Remember to provide thoughts on what government should or should not do from a biblical and constitutional perspective. Also discuss what other groups, individuals, and organizations (possibly including state and local government) should be doing within society to address the policy issues discussed in this module/week.
For this Discussion Board Forum, interact in a free-flowing discussion of the biblical and constitutional parameters for the particular policy focus being discussed this module/week. In other words, you must discuss the “May” portion of the “May-Can-Should” approach to policy analysis and implementation. Engage the ideas of your classmates and the required readings and presentations in a meaningful and thoughtful manner.
Policy Brief
Environmental & Energy Policy
For Modules/Weeks 3–7, you are expected to submit a 1 1/2–2-page paper (not including the title page, abstract, and reference page) in current APA format in which the May-Can-Should model is applied in the context of the policy focus in the assigned module/week. Be certain to emphasize a focused analysis of a particular issue chosen from the broader policy concentration for the assigned module/week. You must include citations from:
all of the required reading and presentations from the      assigned module/week
all relevant sources from Modules/Weeks 1–2 (especially      the “Biblical Principles of Government” article), and
3–5 outside sources. NOTE: These sources should be focused on the      problem and the piece of legislation, and you may find that you need more      than just 3-5 sources to adequately research and discuss these items.
Please feel free to use the following      link for the purposes of additional      research.
Students often struggle with keeping the analysis needed for these policy briefs to just 2 pages of content at most (not counting the title page and references), and it can be hard to see past one’s choice of wording to discover that there are indeed many ways to say the same thing with less words. Attached are “before and after” samples of the same policy brief; the first was too long and includes edits of how to shorten it, and the second shows the finished product at 2 pages. Review these before writing your first policy brief.

Qualitative Research- Pneumonia care and the nursing home: a qualitative descriptive study of resident and family member perspectives
The above-mentioned article is a classified as a qualitative research study due to the following qualifying factors;
It gives an insight into the problem being studied through the development of a hypotheses. This is seen in the paper from the background information that clearly introduces the issue of residents in nursing homes being sent to hospitals for treatment on pneumonia issues.
The study helps to uncover trends in thought and opinions by diving deeper into the problem- In the article, several interviews (about 14) were conducted to find out the number of times in that the residents were sent to the hospitals.
Common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews- As mentioned earlier on, the study was conducted through individual interviews that were carried out on some of the patients suggested by the nurses. Only those who could remember their visits to the hospitals and what had caused it were selected.
Rationale for choosing the journal(s) in which the articles were drafted.
The article qualifies as the best selection for the assignment since it one that is detailed in the steps that were taken to carry out the study. The article begins all the way from the abstract section and ends with a concrete conclusion. The article goes as far as providing tables that outline the data that was collected form the study
Quantitative research- A Quantitative Study on the Condom-Use Behaviors of Eighteen- to Twenty-Four-Year-Old Urban African American Males
Qualities that qualify the study as a quantitative study include;
The method generalizes results from a larger sample population. -In this case, about 364 males were chosen to represent the population that was being studied. The results that were gotten from them were then analyzed and used for the analysis.
Quantitative data collection methods are much more structured than Qualitative data collection methods-In the research done on the condom use behaviors, structured methods were used in that there were collection surveys used; they were coded with unique identifiers and that were administered to the enrolled participants. This was done based on appropriate schedules in a secured office space at one selected community centers
To add on to the selection of the sample, the data analyses methods used in the study are complex in nature to ensure that the generalizations that were made were correct.
The above article is suitable for use in this paper because of the intensive work that has been done. A systematic analyses of how the study was conducted has been clearly outline making it reliable.
